Pieter Aertson (Dutch, 1507-1575) Virgin Mary Oil on panel 22 ½” x 41 ½” Inscribed lower left Pieter Aertsen (Amsterdam, 1508 – 3 June 1575), called Lange Pier ("Tall Pete") because of his height, was a Dutch painter in the style of Northern Mannerism. He is credited with the invention of the monumental genre scene, which combines still life and genre painting and often also includes a biblical scene in the background. He was active in his native city Amsterdam but also worked for a long period in Antwerp, then the centre of artistic life in the Netherlands. His genre scenes were influential on later Flemish Baroque painting, Dutch still life painting and also in Italy. His peasant scenes preceded by a few years the much better-known paintings produced in Antwerp by Pieter Bruegel the Elder.

The Urn surmount with a framed portrait of a beauty flanked by swags, the architectural case with arched pediment set with a trellis and a flower-painted panel, the enamel dial inscribed, Gleizes / A Paris / Place Vendome N3, with twin-train movement, flanked by two-further portraits, above a frieze emblematic of fleeting Love, the rounded sides each with a trellis and flower plaque, on a shaped paneled plinth and toupie feet. Records and personal diaries indicate that Durrie read Shakespeare and was inspired to paint Falstaff. According to Martha Hudson, “Two portraits of Falstaff are known, both listed in the record book. The 1852 painting (this portrait) is thought to be a portrait of the actor James Hackett portraying Falstaff, a role he made famous in America. Since Hackett performed in New York City as well as on tour, Durrie could easily have seen a performance. Obviously the characterization was effective because the portrait is jovial and abundant in appearance as one could hope for a Falstaff.” 17” x 13 ½” (43 x 34.3 cm)
